Summer is here and it’s time to gear up your lawn care equipment and start your summer plans. It’s time to get your small engine tuneups completed and upgrade any small engines that aren’t working anymore so that you are ready for the yard maintenance to come.
These tips will help you get your summer lawn care underway so you can enjoy more of your yard with family and friends and spend less time cleaning, pruning, grooming, and cutting.
Mow Once a Week
Depending on the type of grass you have in your yard you will want to mow your lawn approximately once a week. Make sure not to cut it too short or you will likely destroy your lawn because this will lead to disease and weeds.
Water Every Other Day
If it hasn’t rained then it’s a good idea to water your lawn and plants also. The best time to water is in the evening so that the water has a chance to reach the roots before evaporating. Make sure to check with local regulations on water restrictions to ensure that there isn’t a ban on using water in this frequency or timeframes.
Add Mulch. And Lots of It.
Mulch helps prevent the growth of weeds and unwanted plants while adding nutrients and preventing erosion and runoff. Unless you are a fan of weeds, you should buy your mulch from a reliable source or else you may find out that your mulch actually contains weed seeds.
Beat the Bugs
Plant coriander, dill, spearmint, garlic, marigolds and yarrow to attract insects that battle pests. Ladybugs and lacewings will eat aphids, mites, mealybugs and other insects.
Prepare for Fall Early
Plant broccoli, carrots, lettuce and spinach in the fall around August because these crops mature in a a short period of time and tend to do well in northern gardens like we have in Ottawa.
Maintaining your yard in the summer can be a lot of work but it can also be a lot of fun. With the right plan and the right tools you will make light work of your yard maintenance and care leaving you more free time to enjoy your summer.
